Gay Web Monkey magazine compares me to Sue Grafton and Anne Perry, and says Kimo is "a character you can care about, and when the case threatens to take his very private life public, a character you can root for."

Cindy Chow, librarian at the Kaneohe branch of the Hawaii Public Library, posted the following review on the DorothyL list serve:

"Unknown to his friends and family, Honolulu police detective Kimo Kanapa'aka is a "mahu" - gay, but definitely still in the closet. So when he stumbles across a body while off-duty, he's torn when he realizes that reporting the incident means explaining why he was hanging out at a gay bar. As he attempts to investigate the murder he also must contend with his sexuality and the reactions from his family and coworkers.

"Mr. Plakcy describes Hawaii and its culture beautifully with ample amounts of humor and wit to balance the very serious themes. After meeting the charming author at Bouchercon I'm delighted to be able to write a very positive review without having to describe it as being "interesting." This was a pleasure to read and I look forward to future mysteries in this series."

Thanks, Cindy-- and I think you're pretty "charming" yourself!

Josh Lanyon, author of the Adrien English mystery series, gave me a great review on the DorothyL list serve. Here's what he said:

"I'm about halfway through Neil Plakcy's MAHU, an unexpectedly well-done and evocative police procedural set in Honolulu.

"Kimo Kanapa'aka is a Homicide Detective with a secret--and it isn't his passion for surfing.

"I'm hooked. The characters are excellent--even the minor characters (so far) ring true. The descriptions of Hawaii--the Hawaii the tourists see versus the "real" Hawaii--is beautifully drawn. The details of police routine are well-researched but not overwhelming.

"Most important (to me, anyway) Kimo is a smart and appealing protag who instantly wins your sympathy despite the fact that he starts out the novel making a serious error in judgment.

"If the rest of the novel holds up, MAHU will be on my top ten list for this year."

Very flattering, especially from an author as talented as Josh is. I loved his latest book, The Hell You Say, and gave it a great review for Gay Web Monkey.

Josh also wrote extensively about Māhū in his Amazon.com blog. Click here to read it.

On the DorothyL list serve, the delightful Caro Soles, who did such a fabulous job of organizing the 2006 Bloody Words in Toronto, wrote, "I enjoyed Neil Plakcy's MAHU, with great descriptions of Hawai and a good sense of the people who live there." Caro is also the author of the forthcoming Drag Queen in the Court of Death and The Danger Dance, books that I'll certainly look for.
