Gay beach reads have been somewhat lacking this season. Thankfully, Mahu Surfer by Neil Plakcy came along to perk up my reading list with hot mens, a steamy mystery, and a healthy dose of Hawaii.

As far as lead characters go, Kimo Kanapa’aka is a healthy mixture of hot and deep enough to make him interesting. We find him as a recently outed member of the Honolulu Police Department and reeling from his removal from the force. Vulnerable and still navigating the waters, so to speak, he is approached with an opportunity to continue in another department, but lie to his family and friends...not about being in the closet, but about still working for the force in order to maintain a good cover.

The ensuing pages follow Kimo as he goes undercover. Surfing. Hot! We are treated to such delicious descriptions of the surfers including my personal favorite "not an ounce of fat on his body" which of course is like reading my own Manhunt personal. The investigation surrounds the death of three shot surfers with only a thin string connecting them.

While the detective work was a decent enough plot that moved swiftly, what sets Mahu Surfer apart how it delves into the rich culture of Hawaii. Kimo is a terrific, low-key narrator who allows us to fully experience the traditions of his Hawaiian background and the surfer lifestyle. A just our luck, there’s a little love story for Mr. Cutey Kimo too!

For a nice, easy beach read that will keep you entertained, checked out Mahu Surfer. Combining a gay detective with a rich Hawaiian mystery makes it a hot, sweet read that’s worth it.
